Chroma Key

I've done a little investigation and concluded that I need to make a green screen to do some chroma key effects.

This will give the talking head effect superimposed 'over' the video or still in the background.

Only problem is most of the software seems to be rather pricy, and the free stuff rather flaky or only does part of the job.

So does anyone know just how to get chroma key effects for freeware prices?

Audio recording - Audacity

I'm just getting to grips with this, having installed it a day or two ago.

I had to instal the LAME MP3 bits 'n bobs and it seems to be creating mp3s quite happily.

I really need to have a serious play with this and get to understand what is and perhaps more importantly what isn't possible with Audacity.

Catch you in a bit.

Screen recorder - CAMSTUDIO

The first candidate for screen recording is CAMSTUDIO.

CamStudio is able to record all screen and audio activity on your computer and create industry-standard AVI video files and Streaming Flash videos (SWFs).

You can record a region by windows, have mouse-button-based visual feedback and record audio from speakers.

This is a bare bones and intuative screen recorder. For a free product this has caught my eye, and while it cannot compete with the feature set of the more commercial products it definately does all that you need if all you want to do is record what is happening on your screen.

You can download it and try it for yourself from camstudio.org

There is quite an active community and support forum available for any problems you have setting up or using CamStudio.

Introduction to the project

To those of you reading this, this is the start of a great adventure.

A quest to make an educational video series using only off the shelf / shareware products.

While the subject matter has yet to be finalised it will be technical in nature, and it is hoped that you will provide comments and feedback (possibly even critique) on the series, how it is made and the finished product.

I will be looking at screen capture software, video recording software, audio editing and recording software, video editing software and finally hosting solutions.

Here's to a great journey.
